Get legit · BIR · benefits · getting paid

Make it official.
The professional upgrade nobody teaches.

You can start earning without any of this. But the professionals who last register the work, protect their health and retirement, and get paid through rails that don't eat their rate. None of it is as scary as the horror stories say, and every step below links to the official page, not a rumor. Rules and rates change; the links are the source of truth.

A registered professional can issue a real invoice. That single capability moves you from 'favor' to 'supplier', and suppliers negotiate.
Why bother

Three things being legit buys you.

You become invoice-capable

Serious clients, especially companies, need a real invoice or official receipt to book you as a supplier. Freelancers who can issue one get considered for bigger contracts and better rates. The ones who can't stay in the informal pile.

You stop being invisible

Registered income is provable income. That is what a bank sees for a loan, an embassy sees for a visa, and a landlord sees for a lease. An online career with no paper trail locks you out of everything that asks for proof.

You cover your own back

No employer means no HR enrolling you in benefits. SSS, PhilHealth, and Pag-IBIG all accept self-employed and voluntary members: sickness, maternity, disability, retirement, and housing loans stay available. Skipping them saves a little now and costs a lot later.

Taxes · the calm version

BIR registration, step by step.

This is the part with the scariest reputation and the most mundane reality. You register once, then file on a schedule. Most new freelancers with foreign clients choose the 8% option for its simplicity. This page is orientation, not tax advice; confirm your own situation on the official pages or with an accountant.

1

Register as self-employed

You register with the BIR as a self-employed professional (Form 1901) using your existing TIN, or get one if you've never had one. Registration can be started online through the BIR's ORUS portal, and you'll receive your Certificate of Registration (Form 2303).

2

Choose how you're taxed

If your gross receipts stay within the ₱3M VAT threshold, you can elect the 8% flat option: 8% on gross receipts above ₱250,000 per year, in lieu of graduated income tax and percentage tax. One rate, simple math. The graduated option can beat it if your deductible expenses are high: that's the comparison worth doing once, on paper.

3

Issue invoices and keep books

Registered professionals issue invoices for what they earn and keep simple books of accounts. Sequential invoice numbers, never reused: the same habit the Build Labs teach. This is the paperwork that makes you a supplier instead of a favor.

4

File on the schedule

Quarterly income tax filings plus an annual return. Filing tools built for Filipino freelancers (like Taxumo) automate most of it for a fee, or you file directly at no cost. Put the deadlines in the same calendar you built in the labs.

Numbers that matter here (the ₱250,000 exemption, the ₱3M threshold, the 8% rate) are set by law and can change. The official pages above outrank anything you read elsewhere, including this page.

Your own safety net

SSS, PhilHealth, Pag-IBIG: yes, without an employer.

All three accept self-employed and voluntary members. Contribution tables change yearly, so we link the official rates instead of quoting them. What matters: enroll once, pay on schedule, and the benefits an employee gets from HR stay yours.

SSS

Sickness, maternity, disability, unemployment, retirement, and salary loans. Register or switch to self-employed/voluntary through the My.SSS portal and pay monthly or quarterly.

PhilHealth

Hospitalization and outpatient coverage under the direct-contributor scheme for the self-employed. One hospital stay without it can cost more than years of contributions.

Pag-IBIG

Savings program plus the housing loans most Filipinos eventually want. Voluntary members can also use MP2: a five-year savings program with historically higher dividends than banks.

Getting paid · protect the rate you earned

The transfer rail you pick is a pay cut or a raise.

Two freelancers bill the same $500. One receives thousands of pesos more; the only difference is the rail and its exchange rate. Fees change too often to print, so learn the one comparison that never expires: send a real amount through two rails, compare what lands in pesos, and keep the winner.

Wise

Converts at the mid-market rate with a disclosed upfront fee. Usually among the best effective rates for client transfers and invoicing.

Payoneer

Built for marketplaces and recurring client billing; widely used by Filipino freelancers. Watch the withdrawal and conversion fees. They decide your real rate.

PayPal

The most familiar to clients, and often the most expensive once its conversion spread is counted. Fine to accept; compare before you make it your default.

Local rails (GCash / Maya / bank)

Where the money usually lands in the end. Several transfer services pay out to GCash or PH banks directly; the test is always the same: how many pesos arrived from the same $500?

Official site ↗

The honest method: invoice a real amount, receive it through two different rails once, and write down what landed. Ten minutes of arithmetic, done once a year, protects every future invoice. No fee table on the internet, including ours, beats your own receipt.

The honest bottom line

Legit is a system you set up once, not a tax you pay forever.

One registration, three memberships, one payment rail chosen on evidence. After setup it is a few hours per quarter, and in exchange you can invoice like a supplier, prove your income, borrow, travel, and get sick without a catastrophe. This is the infrastructure under a career that lasts.

Set it up in your first three paid months, not your first week. Earn first, then make it official.

Why invoice-capable wins

Direct clients, retainers, and the supplier positioning that raises rates.
